But after the success of Persona 5, this release of P4G is bringing the game to a new (more global) audience. After all, it's a product of its time and of its culture. It may seem unfair to critique a Japanese game from over a decade ago for having outdated views. This isn't a fine red wine, but a bottle of sparkling that's gone flat. Yet with its outdated stereotypes and dialogue filled with misogyny and homophobia, P4G has not aged well. Persona Series - Announce Trailer | Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, PC, Nintendo Switchįirst released in 2008 and followed by the Golden version on PS Vita in 2012, this launch is something of a retro re-release. Working backwards, I jumped into P4G - a game many consider to be a high point in the series. It also left me intrigued about its predecessors, which are finally now available beyond PlayStation with the release of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden on Switch and Xbox. It instantly became one of my favourites. Its mix of social management and JRPG was like nothing I'd experienced, its soundtrack was infectious, its teen drama thrilling. I'd never previously played a game in the Persona (or Shin Megami Tensei) series. Previously it was Breath of the Wild and The Witcher 3. Getting to know these characters - whether they're part of your friend group that's investigating The Midnight Channel or they're completely oblivious to what you do inside the TV - can be very rewarding in its own way. It was easy for me to connect with, or in some cases sympathize with, pretty much everyone I got to know throughout my various playthroughs - to the point where once the ending credits started to roll, I felt like I was saying goodbye to several real friends. Each year, there's often one game that dominates my time for a hundred or so hours. As a bonus (though, for argument's sake, it's the real reason to keep improving Social Links), your relationship with that character will grow stronger and you'll learn more about them. Every time a Social Link gains a level, any Persona of that Arcana you fuse will get an immediate experience boost - and possibly even learn a special new skill). The catch is that your own Personas have limits to the number of skills they can learn as they level up, while your companions' un-swappable Personas will continue to gain new abilities for a very long time.Ī whole lot of characters in "Persona 4 Golden" have the potential to open up a new social link, with each link connected to an Arcana (Tower, Fool, Justice, etc.) that corresponds to its own category of Persona. What really sets your own character apart is his ability to switch between multiple different Personas, as well as fuse them together to create entirely new (and much stronger) manifestations. You have your own from the start, but as the investigations progress and your friends begin to face their true selves, they'll be able to join you in combat and bring their own unique strengths and weaknesses to each fight. But in this world, these "other selves" can be called upon in battle to cast spells, grant aid, and perform other useful functions beyond anything a regular person could accomplish on their own. Personas act as a sort of manifestation of the "masks" or "personalities" that we show other people in our day-to-day lives. The same could be said of you and your friends who unwittingly stumble into this strange world, but you have an advantage.
